Yep, this is me writing about my top five favorite moments of 2014. Deal with it!
1. 2014 — The Year I Shook Off the Shackles
Nothing short of pregnancy will beat out my quitting my job. And I did it with a lot more class than in my dreams. I didn’t tell off any annoying patrons (or coworkers) or play mean spirited pranks. But I did feel it was time for an apocalypse.
The joke behind this is that one of my former coworkers was all about the baby pandas. She watched two or three live cam feeds and you could count on her calling everyone who cared to her desk whenever one of the furry babies did something cute. Anyway, it was incredibly freeing, having the exterior staff door swing closed behind me. And terrifying, because there was no going back now. It was either be a writer or start putting in applications. Risk flaming, screaming failure or return to the world of egos and paperwork.
I think I made the right call on that.
2. Hearing Billy Boyd’s “The Last Goodbye” play during the end credits of The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies
I teared up. Sniffled. It might even devolved into actual crying. The cynical part of me says that it probably won’t be the “last goodbye” because Hollywood might decide Tolkein is enough of a golden goose to try to bring The Silmarillion to the big screen if the Tolkein estate were to sell the film rights. But it was still a very moving moment nonetheless. Tolkein’s work hasn’t been the huge influence on me that it has been on other fantasy writers, but it’s still an important part of my inner well from which I draw on for my writing.
3. When Frankie and the dogs got along.
2014 saw a new addition to our family in the form of a kitten! We were so worried. Ben once tried to ambush a goat through a fence and fostering small dogs never ended well, so we were concerned that the two dogs’ prey instincts would be too strong. And at first, it looked like it was all going to end with a guilt-ridden trip to the animal shelter. But now everyone gets along like a house on fire and we’re richer for it. Ben gets to have something to baby (he cleans Frankie’s ears on a regular basis) and Scholly….has something new to ignore until she feels vaguely affectionate. And I have a fluffy lap warmer to get in my way when I’m on the laptop. Everyone wins!
4. Celebrating my nephew’s first birthday and getting a new niece.
My nephew Matthew is especially close to my heart because I saw him within minutes of his birth. My other nieces, I was introduced to months later. I had the time off to be able to make the drive to the hospital and was there to get in the way while the nurse tried to take measurements. I like to think it built up some kind of special connection because he comes to me like I’m a giant magnet (at Christmas, he went straight to me, climbed into my lap, and stayed there for a while, nearly falling asleep!). His first birthday was earlier this year and it was great fun!
And then my husband’s brother’s wife gave birth to her first child, a beautiful baby girl. I love babies and was happy when I got the chance to cuddle that one.
5. Watching Guardians of the Galaxy for the first time.
